No. 12 Women's Swimming & Diving Capsize Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 12-ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team downed the Hornets of Kalamazoo, 154-88. The victory moves Calvin to 4-0 against MIAA competition and 8-3 overall. The Knights won nine of the 13 events on Saturday.

"Today was a very productive day," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We were able to give some of our top athletes a day off while training at home and we were able to give some more opportunities for some of our depth to score points and have some meaningful roles. The team was strong all day long and won many close races. I feel that we are starting to turn the corner positivity towards championship season."

The day started with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), sophomore Anna Kutschke (Manistee, Mich./Manistee), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) won with a time of 4:10.61.

Freshman Laura Barbachyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:42.17.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Libby Engle won with a time of 2:00.24.

Hannah Chao led a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Chao won with a time of 25.56. Jenna Oezer placed second at 26.36. Chao also won the 100-yard freestyle at 56.11.

Sophomore Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) sank the Hornets in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:22.55. Freshman Audrey McFarland (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) was in second place at 2:23.67 and junior Kara Komerak (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central) finished in third place at 2:28.38.

Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) had a successful Saturday on the 1-meter board with 272.65 points in first place.

Sophomore Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led a Calvin sweep in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.87. Emily Slenk secured a second-place finish at 1:06.04 and sophomore Sydney Boyer (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) finished third at 1:06.50.

The Knights closed the pool with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), junior Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego), Sydney Boyer and Libby Engle won with a time of 1:43.54.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday for senior day against arch-rival Hope.
