INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team opened competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday.
The Knights had three individual swims and one relay swim in the morning prelims.
Calvin opened the day in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) was 30
th in the 5000 freestyle in a time of 5:02.87.
Senior
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took 46
th (23.82) and junior
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School) 53
rd (24.11) in the 50 freestyle.
Calvin then competed in the 400 medley relay. Seeded 23
rd, the Knights placed 18
th in a time of 3:49.65. The Knights missed a spot in the consolation finals by just two places. The relay consisted of junior
Emma Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS), Bajwa, senior
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) and Bengelink.
Calvin will now turn its attention to Thursday with the Knights slated to compete in the 200 freestyle relay where it is seeded 12
th. Merkel will also compete in the 200 freestyle individually.
COACHES COMMENT: "A solid opening day," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We have some opportunities ahead of over the next three days with a chance to score points. We are hoping to pick up momentum as we move along in the meet."
NEXT UP: Day two of the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships are set for 10 a.m. on Thursday with championship event finals set for 6 p.m.
