Calvin Women's Swimming & Diving Completes Day One at NCAA III Championships

GREENSBORO, NC – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team opened competition at the NCAA III Championships and just missed getting on the scoreboard on day one.

Calvin's 200 medley relay team of junior Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler HS), sophomore Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep HS), junior Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and sophomore Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) took 17th in the morning prelims with a time of 1:44.99, missing the consolation finals by one-hundreth of a second.

Earlier in the 50 freestyle, Sonday was 19th (23.53) and Farrell 41st (23.90).

"I thought our women's team had great speed all day," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "Even though they got touched out of the points, they are swimming well and they know their best opportunities to score are still ahead of them. They are going to do some special things over the next three days."

The second day of competition of the four-day meet continues on Thursday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and championship finals at 6 p.m.
