GREENSBORO, NC – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team got on the scoreboard at the NCAA III Championships with a trio of All-America performances.
Highlighting the day was the performance of junior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) who claimed All-America honors in the 100 butterfly with a seventh place time of 55.05.
Farrell entered the meet seeded seventh and took eighth in the morning prelims with a time of 55.28. She then had a strong evening swim to move up a place, coming within three-hundreths of a second within sixth place.
Farrell is the first individual in Calvin women's swimming history to earn a top-eight (All-America) swim at the NCAA III Championships.
Calvin scored in the 200 freestyle relay as the relay team of Farrell, sophomore
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), freshman
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and junior
Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler) took 11
th in the consolation final with a time of 1:34.03 after swimming 1:34.46 in the morning prelims. The 11
th place swim was good for a Second Team All-America finish.
Gable then picked up points in the 200 freestyle individually, placing 10
th with a time of 1:50.62 after taking 14
th in the morning prelims in a time of 1:51.47. The 10
th place finish in the consolation finals was good for a Second Team All-America finish.
The Knights scored 31 points on the day which is good for 18
th place in the team standings heading into Friday's competition."I thought we had a phenomenal day," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos "I thought we caught a few bad breaks in the 200 medley relay last year and were a little nervous. We had a team talk last night and decided to find a way to figure it out and score some points. I thought we did more than that. We had three big swims today and are building some momentum."
Action continues on Friday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and evening finals set for 6 p.m.
