The Calvin women's swimming and diving team had a strong final day of competition at the MIAA Championships as the Knights finished second in the final team standings with 854.5 points.
The Knights crowned one event champion on Saturday as their 400 freestyle relay team of junior
Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler HS), junior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), senior
Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) and sophomore
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) took first place in a time of 3:25.23. The time currently ranks eighth nationally. Gable led off the relay with a 100 freestyle split of 50.78 that puts her 10
th on the NCAA III performance list.
It marked the fourth straight win by Calvin in the event including its eighth in the last nine years.
Calvin opened the meet with the 1650 freestyle with sophomore
Megan Pankratz (Palatine, Il./William Fremd HS) taking fourth (18:22.50) and junior
Lynda Steen (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) taking sixth (18:35.81).
Calvin went 2-5-7 in the 200 backstroke with Gable taking second with a time of 2:01.05 that ranks 13
th nationally. Senior
Claire Sytsma (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fifth (2:10.49) and freshman
Madilyn McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS) seventh (2:14.93). Junior Sadie Noorman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS) won the consolation final with a ninth place time of 2:12.23.
The 100 freestyle was a big point producer for the Knights as they went 2-3-8 with Sonday taking second (51.43), Farrell placing third (51.57) and Brown eighth (53.36).
In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore
Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep HS) took second with a season-best time of 2:21.66. Freshman
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) won the consolation final with a time of 2:31.90 with junior
Sophia Korfmacher (Midland, Mich./Lakeshore HS) 10
th (2:31.96).
Sophomore Abigal Merz (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:14.10) with junior
Natalie Fisher (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) winning the consolation final with a ninth place time of 2:18.06.
COACHES COMMENT: "We really wanted to double down on just trying to improve and I thought we did a great job of that this week," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "Our team didn't hold back and made great strides. We should be sending 5-6 swimmers to nationals and they'll be ready to compete with their teammates all behind them."
