GRAND RAPIDS- The Calvin women's swim and dive team continued to put on a record breaking performance during the second day of the Winter Invitational.

Right away they got off to a great start in the 800 yard free relay as junior Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), junior Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler HS), sophomore Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), and senior Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va/Home School) placed 6th with a time of 7:48.48.

Arguably, the highlight of the night was the 200 yard medley relay as Gable, sophomore Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep), Farrell, and Sonday set a new school record with a time of 1:44.00. The previous record was 1:44.19 and has stood since 2020. Their time in the event was good enough for a third place finish as well as earn them a spot in the top-10 (Division III) nationally.

One event later Farrell set the school record in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 54.94. The previous record, which was set by Farrell herself in 2021, was 55.46. She placed second in the event and with that time claimed a spot in the top-3 (Division III) nationally.

The Knights continued to perform as Gable took 4th in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.60 and Thier finished 4th in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.22.

Calvin is competing in a seven team field with Division-II powerhouses Grand Valley State, Findlay, and Northern Michigan. After day two the Knight currently sit in fourth place with a total score of 613.5.

COACHES COMMENT: "A really solid swim all the way through," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Even as the swims started to add up, we stayed tough. Our bench was excited and doing some good cheers so it was good to see [the women] do so well."

UP NEXT: The women are back in the pool tomorrow for the third and final day of the Winter Invitational. The prelims are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. while the finals will be at 6 p.m. in Venema Aquatic Center.
