GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team took first place at its own Calvin Quad Invitational. The Knights posted a first place team score of 1,658 points with Carthage second (767), Albion third (569) and Ohio Northern fourth (545).
Calvin took first place in a number of events on Saturday that were split up into morning and afternoon sessions.
Calvin opened Saturday with a win in the 200 medley relay as the team of freshman
Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler), sophomore
Haley Thier (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep), junior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and freshman
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took first place in a time of 1:47.98 that ranks 17
th nationally (Division III).
Calvin took the top three spots in the 400 IM as Thier took the win (4:47.19) while freshman
Madilyn McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South) was second (4:50.65), and freshman
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) third (4:59.67).
In the 100 butterfly, Farrell took first place in a season-best tie of 56.90 that ranks seventh nationally.
Calvin took the top five spots in the 100 freestyle. Gable was first (1:55.23), freshman
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) second (2:01.35), sophomore
Sydney Sonday (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (2:03.22), Bengelink fourth (2:03.90) and senior
Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) fifth (2:04.41).
Thier placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:07.20.
The Knights went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with senior Claire Systma (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning in 59.85 while junior
Sadie Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS) was second (1:02.43).
Calvin took first place in the 800 freestyle relay with a season-best time of 7:57.60 that ranks 11
th nationally. The relay consisted of Gable who led off with a split of 1:54.85, followed by Farrell, Sonday and Winkle.
The afternoon session began with the 1650 freestyle. Calvin took the top two spots. Sophomore
Megan Pankratz (Palatine, Il./William Frend HS) took first place in a season-best time of 18:34.13 that currently ranks 16
th nationally. McNearney took second in a time of 19:01.00.
The Knights also went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke with Gable taking first (2:08.29) and Sytsma placing second (2:11.87).
Winkle took second in the 100 freestyle (54.48).
In the 200 breaststroke, Thier was second (2:25.26) and Radawski third (2:36.26).
Farrell won the 200 butterfly in a season-best time of 2:13.39.
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay of Farrell, Gable, Bengelink and Sonday took first place in a season-best time of 3:36.56 that ranks fifth nationally.
On the one-meter diving board, freshman
Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) took first place with a score of 300.70 points.
COACHES COMMENT: "Got to run through our entire event lineup against some strong Division III teams," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We performed well throughout, had near 100% season bests, and looking forward to finishing up our fall training and see what we have going at our own Calvin Invite in December."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Friday for a double-dual meet against Kalamazoo and Olivet with a start time of 5 p.m.
