GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team improved to 6-3 in dual meet competition with victories over Olivet and Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Calvin defeated Olivet 166-49 and Kalamazoo 127-105.
Calvin took first place in nine events in Saturday's triangular. The Knights opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.09. The Calvin relay consisted of senior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer HS), sophomore Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), junior Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School).
Gunderson had a big day, winning the 50 freestyle in 24.60.
In the 1,650 freestyle, Calvoin took two of the top three spots with junior Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) winning in 18:35.34 and senior Emily Slenk (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) taking third in 19:08.93.
Sophomore Grace Anne Delcompare (Naples, Fla./Home School) won the 400 IM (4:51.64) with Brown winning the 100 freestyle (54.87) and senior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) winning the 200 backstroke (2:11.39).
Sonday led a one-two Calvin finish in the 200 breaststroke with Sonday taking first (2:33.66) and freshman Alice Crowe (Lewis Center, Oh./Olentangy Orange HS) taking second (2:36.63).
Calvin took four of the top five spots in the 500 freestyle with sophomore Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) second (5:36.45), Slenk placing third (5:32.99), junior Brooke Elzinga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fourth (5:33.23) and Delcompare placing fifth (5:36.24).
Junior Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) had a huge day on the diving boards, winning the one-meter with a score of 262.65 and the three-meter with a score of 253.15.
COACHES COMMENT: "We wanted to take on the long races today with the 1,650, 400 IM and 200 stroke events," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We have been working on our warmup patterns, race strategies and toughness in practice and wanted to test ourselves. I think we are starting to see how much we have grown in many different ways which is exciting and rewarding to see."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Albion and Alma next Saturday in a triangular scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
