GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Kalamazoo Hornets edged the No. 18 Knights on Senior Day at the Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday, 123-120. Calvin won four events on the day and moves to 7-6 on the year.
"It was good to be back in our pool," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "After a few road contests, it was a great senior day, there were a lot of good swims in the results. The women almost pulled off the victory with winning only four events, which is almost impossible in a scored college meet, we are looking forward for our conference championship."
Senior Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the first Calvin victory on Senior Day in the 200 freestyle. Schroder touched the wall with a winning time of 1:58.62, her fastest time of the year. In second place was freshman Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) at 1:58.78.
Schroder added to her senior day by finishing in second place in the 100 backstroke at 1:01.46.
Senior Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) earned a pair of second-place finishes on senior day. In the 200 IM she finished with a time of 2:21.03 and at 1:02.78 in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Abby VanHarn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 51.16.
In the 500 freestyle, Anna Serino was victorious with a time of 5:17.19, winning by over five seconds.
Calvin finished the day winning the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Megan Schroder, sophomore Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), freshman Ka'lee Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) and Abby VanHarn won with a time of 1:38.65.
The Knights return to the pool in two weeks as Calvin will host the MIAA Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center from Feb. 17-20.
