- The Calvin Lead-Up – Calvin heads into season two under head coach Trent Figg. The Knights are off to a 3-0 start after wins over Oberlin (88-6), Concordia of Wisconsin (34-7) and Heidelberg (40-37 OT), marking the first time that Calvin has strung together a three-game win streak. Calvin faces its first MIAA conference opponent on Saturday in Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo is also 3-0 on the young season, having defeated Austin 14-10, Bethany (50-7) and Anderson (27-0). Calvin is paced on offense by sophomore running back Hunter Hogan who has 567 yards rushing (6.4 ypc) and six touchdowns. Hogan has also snared 11 catches for 75 yards. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro has connected 49 of 81 pass attempts for 563 yards and eight touchdowns. He has been intercepted once. Sophomores Luke Michmerhuizen and Jude Klunder have been his top receiving targets. Michmerhuizen has 18 catches, 246 yards and five touchdown receptions. Klunder has 11 grabs for 149 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, sophomore Carson Schnurstein has 44 tackles (23 solo) including 10.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Caiden Bolduc has 20 tackles, four sacks and has returned one interception for a touchdown. Sophomore Trevor Martens has 17 tackles. Sophomore Sal Ruffino is 5 of 7 on field goals with a long of 35. Martens and Ruffino were members of the 2024 All-MIAA Second Team.
- The Kalamazoo Lead-Up - Kalamazoo is led by senior quarterback Dawson Skupin. A graduate of South Lyon High School, Skupin is in his first year as a starting quarterback. He is 53 of 78 through the air for 723 yards and nine touchdowns. He has not thrown an interception this fall. Skupin also leads the Hornet run game with 210 yards on 40 attempts with one touchdown. Senior wideout Lucas Hanifan is Skupin's primary target. A member of the 2024 All-MIAA Second Team, Hanifan has 19 catches for 327 yards and five touchdowns. Aaron Zekman has 13 catches for 177 yards and three scores. Junior linebacker Raymond Cargill leads the Kalamazoo defense with 23 tackles (16 solo). Defensive lineman Nolan Jannenga has 12 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Cargill has been a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week selection while Jannenga has received the award once.
- Homecoming Notes – Calvin is hosting Kalamazoo in the first-ever on-campus homecoming football game for the Knights. Saturday's game is presented by the DeNooyer Automotive Family. Saturday's football game is part of a triple-feature on the Calvin Soccer Stadium turf with the women's soccer team facing Ohio Northern at noon and the men's soccer team hosting DePauw University at 2:30 p.m.
- Last Year's Meeting – Kalamazoo pulled out a 33-31 victory over Calvin at Angell Field. Calvin outgained Kalamazoo in total yardage 535-362 but the Knights were charged with 19 penalties for 179 penalty yards. Calvin quarterback Chase Bradman was 40 of 54 for 393 yards and four touchdowns. Josh Nichols was 18 of 36 for 247 yards and four touchdowns while Dawson Skupin came on for a drive to complete 4 of 5 for 53 yards and a touchdown. Kalamazoo scored the winning touchdown on a two-yard third down pass from Nichols to Jonah Spates in the back corner of the end zone with 23 seconds remaining. Luke Michmerhuizen and Seth Ritsema had nine catches apiece for the Knights with Ritsema scoring two touchdowns and Michmerhuizen one. Michmerhuizen had a career-high 137 receiving yards. Carter Bylsma also had three catches and a touchdown. Lucas Hanifan snared five catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Spates had eight catches for 73 yards and three Hornet touchdowns.
- Calvin Week Three Rewind – Calvin picked up an exciting 40-37 overtime victory at Heidelberg last Saturday night. Luke Michmerhuizen snared an 11-yard touchdown pass in overtime to win the game in walk off fashion for the Knights. Michmerhuizen came up with a career-high 10 catches along with 133 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Jude Klunder had two catches, 53 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Hunter Hogan had 41 carries for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns, setting new career marks for carries and rushing yards. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro was 18 of 31 for 242 yards and three touchdown passes. Sophomore linebacker Carson Schurstein tallied a career-high 16 tackles along with an interception and one forced fumble. Sophomore Caiden Bolduc notched a career-high 11 tackles to go with two sacks, two pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one blocked kick. Freshman safety Reed Vogeler and sophomore linebacker Trevor Martens had nine tackles apiece.
- Kalamazoo Week Three Rewind – Kalamazoo claimed a 27-0 win over Anderson University last Saturday night in a game lengthened and also ended by weather. The Hornets led 14-0 at halftime at Angell Field and then sat through a two-hour weather delay as thunderstorms swept through southwest Michigan. Kalamazoo extended its lead to 27-0 into the fourth quarter. With 4:46 remaining, the game was halted and then eventually concluded with a new weather pattern sweeping through the Kalamazoo area. Dawson Skupin led Kalamazoo with 64 yards rushing while connecting on 15 of 27 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Senior receiver Lucas Hanifan caught both touchdown passes for the Hornets and was also credited with three catches for 42 yards. Aravind Krishnan had a two-yard touchdown run for Kalamazoo while Ben Maurice had a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Hornets. Raymond Cargill tallied seven tackles for Kalamazoo. Dillon Gacki had 2.5 tackles for loss including 1.5 quarterback sacks.
- The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He has a career won-loss record of 5-8 heading into Saturday. Figg is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.
- A Look at the Kalamazoo Coach – Jamie Zorbo is in his 18th year as head coach of the Kalamazoo program. He is 58-107 as head coach at Kalamazoo which includes two winning campaigns and two .500 seasons. Over the last two-and-a-half years, Kalamazoo is 12-11 under his watch. He is a 2000 Kalamazoo College graduate. He was a four-year letterwinner with the football program, earning All-MIAA Second Team honors as a senior in 1999. He graduated with a degree in chemistry. He later earned his master's degree from Western Michigan University and served as an assistant coach with both Kalamazoo and DePauw. He took over the reins of Kalamazoo's football program in 2008. He also serves as the Kalamazoo College Director of Athletics.
- MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish seventh out of eight teams in the 2025 MIAA preseason poll with champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite and defending MIAA champion Hope picked a close second. 2025 MIAA Preseason Poll: 1. - NCAA III Statistics Top 10 – Hunter Hogan is ranked second in the latest NCAA III statistics in rushing yards (567), trailing only Jamarrius Courntey of Crown University (Mn.) who has 580. He is ranked fifth nationally in rushing yards per game (189.0) and rushing touchdowns (5). He is ranked third in all-purpose yardage (244.67). Sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen is ranked eighth in touchdown receptions (5). Carson Schnurstein is ranked fifth nationally in total tackles (44) and eighth in solo tackles (23). As a team, Calvin has the fifth-ranked rushing offense (323.0) and is ranked fourth in scoring offense (54.0).
- MIAA Weekly Honors – Luke Michmerhuizen was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and Caiden Bolduc named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week this past Monday for their efforts in Calvin's victory at Heidelberg. Hunter Hogan was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in week two for the Knights.
- National Honors – Sophomore linebacker Caiden Bolduc was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week this past Tuesday for his play in Calvin's win at Heidelberg last Saturday. It marked the second straight week a Calvin linebacker has received the honor as Carson Schnurstein was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for week two.
- A Look at Calvin – Once again, Calvin features one of the younger rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 38 freshmen and 67 sophomores as part of their 116-man roster. 13 players feature from other states including Illinois (4), Texas (2), California (1), Louisiana (1), Tennessee (1), North Carolina (1), Florida (1), New Mexico (1) and New York (1) with the remaining 103 coming from Michigan.
- The Calvin Offense by the Numbers – (58 total) - Quarterbacks (4), Running Backs (8), Wide Receivers (14), Tight Ends (5), Offensive Lineman (27).

- The Quarterback Room – Sophomore transfer Thomas Vaccaro has been selected to start at quarterback on Saturday with sophomore Drake Irwin his backup. Vaccaro is a transfer from Samford University (Ala.) where he spent two years which included a redshirt season. He is a graduate of Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Vaccaro was Irwin is a local product out of Rockford High School. He appeared in five games in 2024, completing 7 of 9 passes with one touchdown. At Rockford High School, he led the Rams to a Division I District Title his senior year. Also listed at quarterback are true freshmen Beau Harris and Amari Powell.
- Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiver unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian), Seth Anderson (Rockford) and Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian HS) are listed as starters today. Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna HS) will also see receiving looks out of the backfield. Sophomores Shamar White (East Kentwood HS) and McCoy Baxter (Rockford HS) are listed as key backups.The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013.
- Hanifan's Hands – Kalamazoo senior wide receiver Lucas Hanifan has 144 career receptions for 1,969 yards and 21 touchdowns in his Hornet career heading into Saturday. He is ranked ninth on the Kalamazoo career reception chart, eighth in career receiving yards and (tied) for third in career touchdowns. Hanifan was a standout receiver at Chelsea High School. In the 2021 Division IV state championship game, he snared an MHSAA record five touchdown receptions in Chelsea's epic 55-52 come-from-behind victory over Hudsonville Unity Christian High School.
- OK-Red Flavor – The Calvin football team has a strong representation from the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference as Rockford (Seth Anderson, Drake Irwin, Mike Liggett, Jonah Carlson, McCoy Baxter, Gavin Currie), Jenison (Zaiden Chirco, Rowan Stewart, Colin Diekman, Trevor Martens) and East Kentwood (KJ Harp, ShaMar White, Breylon Cox, Kenji Nou, Gabe Wolf), Grand Haven (Logan Minier) and Grandville (Aven Kaat) are all represented on the Calvin roster with a total of 17 O K Red alumni.
- Cousin Connection – Sophomore quarterback Drake Irwin and sophomore wide receiver Jude Klunder are first cousins.
- Classroom Distinction – The 2025 Calvin football team features 17 individuals were named to the 2024-25 MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.50 grade point average or above for the entire academic year while earning a varsity letter. Those 17 individuals include: Paul Bouma, Peter DeKruyter, Colin Diekman, Tate Dohm, Ben Ernstes, Noah Funk, Andrew Helmus, Drake Irwin, Brady Jacobs, Caden Kolanowski, Peter Markvluwer, Trevor Martens, Luke Michmerhuizen, Micah Pobursky, Hayden Slegers, Conner Smits and Brayden Steinbacher.
- Transfer Portal – Calvin has nine players that have transferred over from other collegiate football programs. Those nine individuals are senior Jair Nowlin (Greenville University), senior Charlie Garbowski (Finlandia University), junior Alex Minnehan (Grand Valley State), junior C.J. Sheets (Davenport University), junior Sam Gallo (Concordia, Mich.), sophomore Wyatt Young (Saginaw Valley State University), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Samford University), sophomore Tyler Porte (Central Michigan University) and sophomore Carter Bylsma (Dordt University).
- Just for Kicks – Calvin's lead kicker is redshirt sophomore Sal Ruffino out of Cadillac, Michigan backed up by sophomore Logan Nap from Lawton, Michigan. Nap is also the lead punter and is backed up by sophomore Drake Irwin.
- Traveling from Out-of-State – Calvin features 13 players from outside Michigan. Those players include senior Jair Nowlin (Sugarhill, Georgia), junior Alexander Minneham (Lakeville, New York), sophomore Tripp Moore (Millsap, Texas), sophomore Hayden Slegers (Ontario, California), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Franklin, Tenn.), sophomore Kai Hanog (Weatherford, Texas), sophomore Max Lenters (Palos Heights, Illinois), freshman Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C.), junior C.J. Sheets (Longwood, Fla..), freshman Christian Flutman (Orland Park, Il.), freshman Chase Sytsma (Orland Park, Il..), freshman Ryan Ramirez (Albuquerque, N.M.), freshman Edward Van Dellen (Evergreen Park, Ill.).
- Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of four graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by sophomore linebacker Trenton TenBrock, sophomore linebacker Jackson Cook and freshman offensive lineman Connor Nash.
- High Schools Represented – The high schools with the most represented players are: Hudsonville Unity Christian (7), Rockford (6), Holland Christian (5), East Kentwood (5), Grand Rapids Christian (4) and Jenison High School (4).
- A Look Ahead – The Knights travel to Alma next Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest and will then have a bye week for Oct. 11. Other home contests include Adrian (Oct. 18), Trine (Oct. 25) and Olivet (Nov. 1).
