2025 D3FOOTBALL.COM ALL-REGION 4 TEAMS
Calvin sophomore linebacker
Carson Schnurstein has been named to the D3football.com All-Region 4 Second Team.
A native of Portage, Michigan, Schnurstein is the first player in Calvin football history to receive D3football.com All-Region honors. Of the 78 players to receive D3football.com All-Region 4 honors, Schnurstein is one of only six sophomores to be selected.
A graduate of Portage Central High School, Schnurstein had a sterling sophomore campaign this fall for the Knights.
Schnurstein finished the 2025 campaign with a Calvin single-season record 115 tackles, 52 solo and 63 assisted. He has been amongst the NCAA Division III leaders in tackles throughout the 2025 campaign. He tallied 14.5 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks. He was also credited with three interceptions, three forced fumbles, four quarterback hurries and two pass breakups.
He concluded the season ranked among the top five players in the MIAA across all positions in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries. On a national level, he placed within the top seven linebackers in tackles, forced fumbles, tackles for loss, and interceptions at the conclusion of the regular season.
His on-field performance had a direct and measurable impact on game outcomes. Notably, he recorded a pivotal interception against Heidelberg (9-20-25) that shifted the momentum and contributed to the Knights' eventual overtime victory. Additionally, in a Nov. 1 contest against Olivet, he produced an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery on consecutive defensive series, each occurring in opponent territory and leading to scoring opportunities for the Knights. He was named MIAA Player of the Week once. He was also named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on September 19 for his play in a win over eventual NCAA III Tournament team Concordia University of Wisconsin.
Schnurstein was later named to the 2025 All-MIAA First Team, becoming the first player in Calvin football history to receive first team accolades.
Schnurstein was part of a remarkable 2025 Calvin football team that finished 7-3 overall in just its second year of competitive play. The 7-3 mark came a year after the Knights went 2-8 in year one. Led by head coach
Trent Figg, the Knights also finished fourth in the MIAA with a 4-3 conference mark after being picked seventh in the MIAA preseason coaches' poll.
