The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team is headed back to the ACHA Division III National Tournament in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. The tournament is slated to take place at the Centene Community Ice Center. The Centene Community Ice Center, which opened in September 2019, is the practice facility for the NHL St. Louis Blues as well as the home of Lindenwood University's hockey programs.
Calvin is making its third consecutive appearance in the ACHA Division III National Tournament. In 2024, Calvin reached the semifinals of the tournament before falling to Grand Valley State 3-2 in the closing minutes of their semifinal encounter.
Calvin is the No. 7 seed for the tournament which involves four pools of teams. Each pool has four teams with pool play consisting of three round robin games with the top team from each of the four pools advancing to the single elimination national semifinals.
Calvin is in a pool with No. 2 Lawrence Tech, No. 10 Sacred Heart and No. 15 Saint Vincent.
The Knights will open pool play with a game against Sacred Heart on March 18 at 11 a.m. (CT) and followed with a March 19 contest against Saint Vincent – also at 11 a.m. (CT). On March 20, Calvin will conclude pool play with an 8 p.m. (CT) contest against Lawrence Tech.
Calvin went 0-1-1 against Lawrence Tech in a weekend series earlier this year, tying a game in Livonia 4-4 before falling 4-1 in Grand Rapids. The Knights defeated Sacred Heart 3-0 in national tournament pool play game last March. Calvin has not faced Saint Vincent but the Bearcats were in West Michigan this season, playing at Hope College in early December.
"We are thrilled for the opportunity to be back in the (national) tournament again," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "We are excited about the pool (of teams) we are in. We have familiarity with each of our opponents. Many of our players have national tournament experience and know the challenges that lie ahead. It's an exciting time for our players and for our program."
Under the direction of Huizenga who is in his second year at the helm of the Calvin ACHA D3 program, Calvin has produced an overall won-loss record of 17-6-3.
