GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin (17-5-3) advanced to the second round of the MCHC Tournament with a 6-1 first round win over Ferris State Friday night at the Patterson Ice Center. The Knights face Grand Valley State in a second round game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. back at Patterson.
Calvin led 2-1 after one period of play behind early goals from
Zach Westrick and
Josiah Lambers. The goal by Lambers was assisted by
Drew Klomparens.
Westrick picked up his second goal of the game in period two off an assist from
Nathan Sova.
Oleg Grishatov made it a 4-1 game off a feed from
Myles Radersma.
Joshua VanSchepen scored on an assist from Westrick in the third period. Klomparens completed the scoring, putting the puck in the back of the net on a set-up by Grishatov.
Garrett Walker was in goal for the Knights and had a strong game with 58 saves.
COIACHES COMMENT: "Credit to our guys. We knew this game would be a chippy, hard-fought game," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "Ferris has given us trouble this year and we were excited for the opportunity. Tomorrow we will have a good matchup against a really good Grand Valley State team. We are looking forward to that matchup."
