GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Calvin University women's swimming and diving team completed day two of the NCAA III Championships on Thursday with two swims earning All-America honors thanks to top-eight finishes.
To open the Thursday night final events, fifth-year senior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) finished seventh in the 100 butterfly in a time of 54.95. Earlier in the preliminary events on Thursday morning, Farrell broke her own school record in the event with a time of 54.69, topping her previous mark of 54.71.
The seventh-place finish gives Farrell three First Team All-America swims in the 100 butterfly in her career. She previously finished fifth in the event in 2024 and seventh in 2023.
The final event of the night was the 200 freestyle relay, where the team of Farrell,
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian),
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) and
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) finished eighth in a time of 1:32.38. The quartet qualified for the finals with a time of 1:32.88 in Thursday morning's prelims.
By making the championship heat, each of Farrell, Bengelink, Merkel and Sonday earned First Team All-America honors. Farrell also broke the Calvin 50 freestyle record with a 23.12 split to open the race. The previous record in the 50 freestyle of 23.17 was set by Abby Van Harn in 2018.
In the morning prelims, Merkel swam 23rd in the 200 freestyle, finishing in a time of 1:51.59.
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) swam in the 400 individual medley and took 30th place with a time of 4:34.31.
Halfway through the four-day event, Calvin is in 11th place as a team with a total of 48 points.

NEXT UP: Calvin women's swimming and diving returns to action on Friday for day three of the NCAA III Championships. Farrell and Merkel will compete in the 100 backstroke, followed by
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School) in the 100 breaststroke. The Knights will also be competing in both the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.
