GREENSBORO, NC – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team had a record-break day of competition at the NCAA III Championships while also claiming an All-America berth and an early spot in the team standings.

Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS), sophomore
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md. Brookewood School), senior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and senior
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) took 10
th with a school-record time of 3:45.13 in the evening. The swim was good for a Second Team Division III All-America performance. The Knights actually broke the school record twice, clocking in with a time of 3:45.63 to take ninth place out of the morning prelims and earn a spot in the evening consolation finals. The quartet then took another half-second off its own mark in the evening.
Freshman
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa. South Fayette Twp.) opened the meet by placing 22
nd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:00.21. Farrell just missed a season-best time in the 50 freestyle prelims, placing 21
st in 23:40.
Calvin has a busy slate on Thursday as Poe will compete in the 400 IM, Farrell in the 100 butterfly, Merkel in the 200 freestyle and the quartet of Merkel, Farrell, Sonday and junior
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) in the 200 freestyle relay.
COACHES COMMENT: "Overall good first night," said Calvin head coach
Dan Gelderloos. "Our women's relay lowered the school record twice. Zoe had a solid first NCAA swim and moved up in the 500 and Maggie was on point in the 50 freestyle. We are looking forward to tomorrow."
Action continues on Thursday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and evening finals slated for 6 p.m.
