GEORGETOWN, Tx. – Calvin outlasted a lengthy weather delay and the host Pirates of Southwestern University Wednesday afternoon to gain a 13-6 non-conference victory. The Knights are now 3-2 on the season.
With Calvin leading 10-6 early in the fourth quarter, the contest was halted by lightning, forcing a 45-minute weather delay. Once back on the field, the Knights proceeded to score three goals to seal the victory 13-6.
Calvin began the match in sluggish fashion, trailing 3-2 after one quarter of play but outscored Southwestern 3-0 in the second quarter to lead 5-3 at intermission. A 4-1 Calvin run in the third quarter lifted the Knights into a 9-4 lead only to see the Pirates close the game before a storm cell hit the area.
Freshman
Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) scored twice in the first quarter to bump Calvin into an early lead. Southwestern scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 3-2 after 15 minutes of play.
Junior
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wisc./Watertown HS) scored three straight goals in the second quarter, all with a player advantage to allow the Knights to take a 5-3 halftime lead.
Johnson and junior
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) scored early in the third to make a 7-3 Calvin lead. Freshman Corrine Plumb (St. Louis, Mo. Westminster Christian Academy) scored on a free position shot to make it 8-4 and Smith followed with another goal to make it 9-4 heading into the fourth quarter of play.
After Southwestern (1-5) closed within 10-6, the weather hit, forcing a long delay. Out of the delay, senior
Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg HS) scored on a free position shot to make it 11-6. Sophomore
Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) added a pair of closing goals to seal the win.
Smith finished with four goals, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Her four-goal output marked her eighth hat-trick performance of her career. Johnson notched her first collegiate hat trick with three goals and one assist. Gothard had two goals and Plumb, Chang, Booher and freshman
Lillian Morey (Davison, Mich./Davison HS) single goals. The goal by Morey was the first of her collegiate career.
Sophomore
Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio Anthony Wayne) had one save in picking up the win in goal.
