Calvin Women's Swimming Tops Wheaton in Dual Meet

WHEATON, Ill. – The 19th-ranked Calvin University women's swimming and diving team defeated Wheaton College 181-97 in a dual meet on the road on Saturday.
 
Calvin took first place in both relays, as well as nine of the 12 individual events during the meet.
 
The day started with the 200 Medley Relay, where the 'B' relay of Grace Schutter (Shelby Township, Mich./Dwight D. Eisenhower), Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School), Holly VanderWeele (San Antonio, Texas/Great Hearts Monte Vista North) and Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won in a time of 1:48.86 over the Calvin 'A' relay of Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South), Gracie Ganger (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe), Emma Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) and Ella Andrews (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian School) in second.
 
Ella McNeely (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) won the 1000 Freestyle in 11:24.84 to start the individual events, and Maria Heeres (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) came next with a first-place finish in the 200 Freestyle ahead of Emmersyn Erway (Davison, Mich./Davison) in second place.
 
Andrews won the 100 Backstroke in 1:01.9 to top Bengelink in third place, while Ganger won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:09.01 to top Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) in second.
 
Merkel (24.23) finished just ahead of Bajwa (24.33) by one-tenth of a second to take the 50 Freestyle, and Radawski added a first-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke with a winning time of 2:34.32.
 
Calvin took the top four finishers in the 100 Freestyle, led by Bengelink (54.34) in first place and Andrews (54.91) in second. The Knights also scored the top three finishers in the 200 IM, led by Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) in first in 2:13.42 and Ganger (2:18.65) and Erway (2:23.35) following in the top three.
 
To finish the meet, the Calvin 'A' 400 Freestyle Relay of Bengelink, Sara Algera (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) Schutter and Merkel won in a time of 3:39.37. That time topped the Calvin 'B' relay of Heeres, Andrews, Radawski and Bajwa by just .19 seconds.
