GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 15
th-ranked Calvin women's swimming and diving team claimed a 172-123 dual meet victory over sixth-ranked Chicago Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center. Prior to the competition, Calvin celebrated eight members of its senior class.
Calvin had a pair of double winners in graduate student
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and sophomore
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS). Farrell captured the 100 butterfly (56.11) and 50 freestyle (23.93). Merkel was a winner in the 100 backstroke (57.70) and 500 freestyle (5:12.24).
Sophomore
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School) also had a win in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in with a first place time of 1:05.59. Junior
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS) also won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:08.96.
Calvin won both relays. Its 200 medley relay of Merkel, Bajwa, Farrell and senior
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) took first place in 1:44.10. Its 200 freestyle relay of Farrell, sophomore
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) Merkel and Sonday took first place in a time of 1:34.34.
Freshman
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa. South Fayette Twp.) took second in the 200 butterfly (2:12.88). Sonday was third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.46).
The Knights went 2-3-4 in the 1000 freestyle with junior
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second (11:27.16), junior
Elizabeth Dylewski (Bridgeville, Pa. South Fayette Twp.) third (11:40.22) and junior
Kailee Turner (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) third (11:42.16).
In the 100 freestyle, Sonday was second (53.77) and Bengelink third (53.96). Bengelink was also second in the 50 freestyle (24.17).
In the diving competition, sophomore
Veronica Skipper (Chicago, Ill. Northside College Prep) and senior
Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) went 2-3 on the one-meter board with Skipper second (258.50) and Heminghous third (211.88). Skipper was also second on the three-meter board (246.22) and Heminghous third (234.07).
COACHES COMMENT: "We honored the seniors today with some great efforts and team work," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "Our women's team got a great win which was a nice upset and we got a good look at a team we will see at the NCAA meet."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Wayne State next Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
