GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin University women's triathlon team kicked off its 2024 campaign with a three-team competition at the Reeds Lake Triathlon.
 
Competing against two other schools Calvin took second place with 64 points while Trine took the top spot with 69 points. Millikin filled out the field in third place with 41 points.
 
The competition used reverse scoring with the top five finishers for each team producing points for their respective teams.
 
Senior Kathryn Gardner (Sarasota, Fl./Riverview) was the top finisher for the Knight in second place overall with a time of 1:13:07. Senior Brianna Timmer (Byron Center, Mich./Plymouth Christian) was close behind in fourth place at 1:14:26.
 
Two minutes later junior Rebekah Etherington (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community) crossed the finish line at 1:16:52 while sophomore transfer Sydney Stewart (Hutto, Tx./Hutto) and sophomore Nadia Beran (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) rounded out the scoring for Calvin when they finished at 1:21:16 and 1:22:57, respectively. 
 
Freshman Anika Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Brooklyn Badders (Gobles, Mich./Lake Bluff) also competed for the Knight with Bouwman finishing at 1:25:07 and Badders crossing the finish line at 1:27:10.
 
COACHES COMMENTS: "Calvin triathlon raced hard and the results showed," said head coach Katie Carpenter. To come so close to Trine, a team who has repeatedly placed first at Nationals, is a great start for us! I am so excited for these athletes and this team as we iron out and fine tune some strategies and skills. They are going to keep moving up!"
 
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on September 21st when they compete in the Millikin Invitational at 8:30 AM.
