Results

The Calvin University men's tennis team finished a strong weekend showing at the Hope Tournament with four first-place finishes between the singles and doubles competitions.

The event started Friday at Holland High School with five separate brackets of 16 players across flights A-E. The matches progressed in a tournament style, with one set scored to eight with a tiebreaker, while the final round was played like normal.

Calvin took home three first-place finishes out of the five draws, led by Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) in first place in the 'A' draw. Alipio went 4-0 in the bracket and ultimately defeated teammate Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) in the final round to win the draw.

Freshman Caleb Bartels (Belton, Mo./Kansas City Christian) took first place in the 'B' draw, securing the win in straight sets 6-1 and 6-0 in the final round.

Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the third first-place finisher in draw 'D' and took his final round in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2.

Elsewhere in singles, Ben Timmermans (Grandville, Mich./Unity Christian) finished as the runner-up in draw 'E' as he lost two tiebreakers in a 7-6 and 7-6 defeat in the finals.

In doubles on Saturday at Hope College with three different draws, the team of Warners and Emmanuel Henao (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") won draw 'B' with a 3-0 tournament that concluded with a 6-3 win in the finals.

Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Saturday, September 21, when it hosts Roosevelt at 11:00 AM.
