Patrick Gillen Named Third Team All-America by ABCA

Calvin University sophomore Patrick Gillen was named Third Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) on Thursday.

The award comes one day after Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) was named Second Team All-America by the website D3baseball.com, making him the second All-American in Calvin baseball program history. His head coach, Kevin Van Duyn, was the first in 1985 and 1987.

Gillen won the honor as a third baseman after completing a stellar 2024 season in which he hit .415 with 11 home runs, 14 doubles and four triples with 46 runs batted in (RBI). He also finished with a .750 slugging percentage and a Calvin single-season record 123 total bases.

Nationally, Gillen was also the 13th-hardest NCAA Division III hitter to strike out at once every 23.4 at bats. He also ranked 25th in total bases, 34th in slugging percentage, and 63rd in batting average.

Already the school record holder for RBI (52) and doubles (17) after his 2023 debut season, Gillen's 11 home runs, 68 hits and 46 RBI each rank second among all single-season performances in program history.

Gillen also moved up the program's career rankings, moving into fourth in home runs (17), tied for fourth in triples (seven), fifth in RBI (98), seventh in total bases (220) and tied for seventh in doubles (31).

Following a terrific spring break trip in Florida in which he hit seven home runs in nine games, Gillen was named National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA). He also won MIAA Position Player of the Week twice this season.

Along with his national and weekly honors, Gillen was named All-MIAA First Team for the second straight season.
