DAVENPORT, Fla. – Calvin University senior
Caden Penn set a new Calvin record for most career doubles on Saturday.
Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) entered the day one shy of Rick Padilla's (2017-22) record of 47, and hit three doubles in Saturday's doubleheader against Chatham and Pittsburgh at Greensburg to push his career total to 49.
On his way to his career record, Penn has hit at least 12 doubles in each of the last three seasons and is tied for the team lead with six doubles through 12 games this season.
"Congrats to Caden for breaking the record," Calvin head baseball coach
Kevin Van Duyn said. "Caden has been terrific for us throughout his career as a player, captain and leader. It's been great to see him reach this record and hopefully he has a lot more doubles in him the rest of his career."
As part of a day in which he went 8-11 at the plate in the two games, Penn also moved into fifth place in program history with 35 career stolen bases. Penn currently has an MIAA-leading eight steals on the season and has not been thrown out in any of his eight attempts.
Penn also became the fifth player in program history to drive in at least 100 runs and currently sits at 102 RBI for his career.
This season, Penn is hitting a team-best .460 with one home run, 23 hits and 11 runs scored.
Calvin baseball will return to action next weekend when it plays a three-game series at Rose-Hulman. The two teams will play one game on Friday (March 15) at 6:00 PM, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday (March 16) starting at 11:00 AM.
