RESULTS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin captured first place at its annual Calvin Quad Meet and did so in record-breaking fashion.
The Knights concluded the 26-hour, three-session meet with a first place total of 1,254 points. Carthage was second (854), Albion third (616) and Ohio Northern fourth (609).
Calvin competed in a morning and late-afternoon session on Saturday. Highlighting the day was the performance of the Knights in the 1650 freestyle. Freshman
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa. South Fayette Twp.) won the race, setting two school records in the process. Poe passed the 1000 yard mark in a split of 10:22.95, breaking the previous Calvin record of 10:38.47 set by Becky Weima in 2007. Poe than finished the 1650 in a school-record time of 17:06.43, breaking the previous Calvin record of 17:30.81 set by Kathryn Wrobel in 2013. The 1650 time by Poe is an NCAA B' cut qualifying time and is currently the top mark in NCAA III women's swimming this season.
Freshman
Piper Sadowski (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took eighth in the race with a time of 19:45.46. Sadowski who competes as a para swimmer in the S14 category, set a new para swimming record in the S14 category with her time, breaking the previous record of 19:55.84 set by Leslie Cichocki in 2018.
The Knights went 1-2-3-4 in the race with senior
Megan Pankratz (Palatine, Ill. William Fremd) placing second (18:40.75), junior
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing third (18:59.19) and senior Becca Streelman (Newberg, Ore. Homeschool) placing fourth (18:59.56).
Calvin went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS) won the race in an NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 2:02.63. Junior
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo. Park Hill South) was second (2:11.70).
The Knights went 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle. Senior
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) claimed first in a time of 51.72 with senior
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) second (52.20) and junior
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (54.15).
The Knights went 2-3 in the 200 breaststroke. Junior
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was second (2:31.45) and freshman
Eloise Harrison (Fishers, Ind. Hamilton Southeastern) third (2:32.43).
Freshman
Grace Schutter (Shelby Township, Mich. Dwight D. Eisenhower) led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 200 butterfly, winning the race in 2:19.11. Junior
Elizabeth Dylewski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Bloomfield Hills) was second (2:19.88), sophomore
Kaelin Kelley (Athens, Ill. Sacred Heart-Griffin) third (2:20.95) and sophomore Laura Miedema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) fourth (2:21.54).
Calvin capped off the evening session by winning the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.23. The relay consisted of Merkel, Farrell, Sonday and Poe and the time is currently No. 1 in Division III women's swimming this season.
In the morning session Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Merkel, Farrell, Sonday and Bengelink took first place n an NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 1:44.27 that currently ranks second nationally.
Poe won the 400 IM in a time of 4:34.29 while McNearney was second (4:50.86). Sonday won the gold medal in the 100 butterfly, winning in a time of 58.71.
Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle with Merkel taking first (1:53.26), freshman
Maria Heeres (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) placing second (1:59.84) and Streelman placing third (2:01.17).
Farrell won the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:05.00 with Radawski third (1:08.96) and Harrison fourth (1:09.58).
Calvin went 4-5 in the 100 backstroke with senior Abigal Merz (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) fourth (1:03.75) and sophomore
Katie Phippen (Macomb, Ill. Calvary Baptist) fifth (1:03.90).
Calvin's 800 freestyle relay of Poe, Heeres, Winkle and McNearney closed out the morning session with a winning time of 8:03.27.
In the one-meter diving competition, sophomore
Leah Schouten (St. Davids, Ontario Eden) was fourth (334.55) and senior
Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) fifth (333.30).
COACHES COMMENT: "Really great 26 hours of competition for our team," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "Our goal was to carry momentum over from last week into this competition and we did that. We had some performances that put people and relays on the national board which is amazing for this early in the season. We have a lot of depth and everyone is pushing each other to improve. It's a good team atmosphere and we are looking forward to the upcoming weeks."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Wheaton next Saturday for a non-conference dual meet set to start at 1 p,m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
