RESULTS
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Competed in a power-packed quadrangular of nationally-ranked Division III opponents at Carnegie Mellon University, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team produced several standout performances including a pool record.
The meet consisted of No. 18 Calvin, No. 17 Carnegie Mellon, No. 10 Johns Hopkins and top-ranked Denison.
Calvin fell in all three head-to-head duals within the competition, falling to Johns Hopkins 155-132, Carnegie Mellon 181-117 and Denison 241-59.
Senior
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) highlighted the afternoon for the Knights, winning the 100 freestyle in a pool-record time of 52.10.

Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), Sonday, senior
Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler HS) and sophomore
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took second in a time of 1:34.90 as the Knights finished just under three-tenths of a second behind first place Denison which currently owns the top time in Division III women's swimming this season.
Gable was third in the 100 backstroke (59.08) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:09.95) while Farrell was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.04) and Bengelink seventh (24.25).
Farrell was also third in the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.31.
Freshman
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, MD./Brookewood School) placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.89) and 11
th in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.39).
Sonday placed ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.97). Sophomore
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS) was also ninth in the 1,000 freestyle (11:18.38). Sophomore
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) added points in the distance events, finishing 12
th in the 500 freestyle (5:24.99).
Freshman
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS) placed seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:08.70) while freshman
Lauren Miedema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was 11
th in the 200 butterfly (2:18.88).
In the diving competition, junior
Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) was fifth on the one-meter board (173.30) and sixth on the three-meter board (192.75).
In addition, Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Gable, Bajwa, Farrell and Sonday took third in 1:45.25.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great afternoon swimming against some very strong teams that we usually don't see until the NCAA III Championships," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderoos. "I was impressed with our preparation and willingness to test our skills against the best. We will be stronger because of it. To leave the meet with a pool record was a bit of icing on the cake."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Kalamazoo and Olivet in a double-dual meet next Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
