RESULTS
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The No. 18 Calvin women's swimming and diving team cruised to a 209.5-86.5 dual meet victory over host Grove City College Friday night. The Knights are now 4-2 in dual meet competition.
Friday's meet marked Calvin's first dual meet of the 2024 calendar and its first competition since a week of post-Christmas training in Florida.
Seniors
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and
Isabella Gable (Greenville, Oh./Arcanum-Butler HS) were both double-winners. Farrell won the 50 butterfly (25.67) and 200 freestyle (1:59.27). Gable took home wins in the 50 backstroke (27.91) and 100 IM (1:02.91).
Freshman
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School) came up with a career-best time in the 100 breaststroke, winning the race in 1:06.42.
Freshman
Veronica Skipper (Chicago, Il./Northside College Prep) had a strong evening, winning the one-meter diving competition with a season-best score of 233.45 and then placing second on the three-meter board with a season-best score of 228.00.
Calvin had a good evening in the freestyle distance events. Freshman
Lauren Miedema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) won the 1,000 freestyle (11:35.44) while sophomore
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS) won the 500 freestyle (5:30.41).
Other individual winners included sophomore
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) in the 50 freestyle (24.97) and junior Abigal Merz (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) in the 50 breaststroke (33.36).
Calvin swept both relay events. Its 200 medley relay team of senior
Sadie Norman (Fulton, Il./Fulton HS), Farrell, sophomore
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) won in a time of 1:51.29. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Farrell, freshman
Anya Hopek (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS), Miedema and Winkle took home a win in a time of 1:41.40. Â
COACHES COMMENT: "It felt good to get back to some racing again," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We are finishing up a big two-week stretch of training and traveling. We are finishing it by taking part in the maybe the biggest Division III meet (tomorrow) all year. Are working on finishing this trip with a bang before we add our second semester classes to the mix beginning next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin travels to Pittsburgh on Saturday for a heavy-duty quadrangular that will include top-ranked Denison, No. 10 Johns Hopkins, Calvin and No. 17 Carnegie Mellon.
