Box Score 2 DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Calvin University baseball team scored a split on its first day of its Florida trip at the RussMatt Invitational, defeating John Jay 13-6 in the opener before falling 11-6 to Chatham in game two.
Calvin 13, John Jay 6
The Knights won the opener 13-6 with the help of nine late runs to pull away from John Jay.
Junior
Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) got the start on the mound and went five innings to earn the win.
The Knights held a 4-3 lead after five innings, and then added three runs in the sixth inning, four more in the seventh, and capped the scoring with two in the eighth.
Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) reached base four times and scored four of Calvin's 13 runs. Gabe Bonnemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) added two hits for the Knights.
Chatham 11, Calvin 6
The Knights were unable to keep the momentum going in game two as they fell to Chatham 11-6.
Sophomore
Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) started the game for the Knights and went the first three innings in defeat.
The Knights hung around early, trailing 4-3, but Chatham was able to break free with a five-run fourth.
Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) went 2-2 with a pair of walks, while
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) added a pair of hits.
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action at the RussMatt Invitational with a doubleheader against Warburg on Monday, February 27, at 9:30 AM.
