Box Score 1 HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team split a pair of games on Friday to bow out of the MIAA Tournament. The Knights opened the day with an 11-8 win over Adrian and then fell to Hope 14-6 in the loser's bracket final. The Knights finish the season with an overall record of 19-18.
GAME ONE
Calvin 11, Adrian 8
Calvin rapped out 14 hits and overcame a 7-4 deficit to defeat the Bulldogs 11-8.
Adrian (21-20) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Knights answered with a three-run inning in the bottom half with senior Rick Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) belting an RBI single and senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) delivering a two-run RBI double.
Adrian regained the lead at 4-3 but the Knights tied it on a solo home run to center by freshman Gabe Bonnemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) in the bottom of the second. Adrian grabbed a 7-4 lead with a three-run third. The Knights remained in contact, thanks to a two-run RBI single by senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) in the bottom of the third that made it 7-6.
Adrian then led 8-6 but a run-scoring double by Padilla and an RBI groundout by senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) tied the game 8-8.
Calvin scored an unearned run in the sixth to take the lead 9-8 and added two insurance runs on an RBI single by senior J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, Il./Elgin HS) to lead 11-8.
Senior Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) went the final six innings for the Knights to pick up the win, boosting his season record to 5-3.
Padilla went 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. Bonnemer and Hung had two hits apiece with Hung driving in three runs. In the game, Padilla recorded his 200th hit, becoming just the second player in Calvin baseball history to achieve the feat with Grant Van Putten leading the all-time Calvin hits list with 234.
GAME TWO
Hope 14, Calvin 6
Hope broke open a one-run game with a seven-run seventh inning outburst to pull away for the win. The two teams combined for 34 hits with Hope amassing 18 hits and Calvin 16.
Vogel went 4-for-5 at the plate while Padilla was 3-for-5. Senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) and junior Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) had two hits apiece with Petersen blasting a solo home run to left in the first inning which also happened to be the first home run of his collegiate career.
An RBI single by Vogel tied the score 2-2 early on but the Knights were never able to gain the lead. Hope used a two-out homer to build a 4-2 advantage with Vogel delivering RBI singles again in the third and fifth to bring Calvin within a run each time.
Hope then broke loose for its seven-run seventh inning outburst to gain firm control of the game.
Freshman Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins HS) added a two-run RBI single in the ninth to complete Calvin's scoring.
Sophomore Brayden Schoonbeck (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) took the loss on the mound for the Knights to fall to 0-2 on the season. The Knights used five different pitchers in the contest.
With his three hits, Padilla bumped his final career total to 206 hits, second on the Calvin career hits list.
