ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season, downing the host Bulldogs of Adrian 5-4 Wednesday afternoon inside the Merillat Fitness Center.
The Knights improve to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA with the win.
Calvin grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles.
In doubles action, freshman Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and sophomore Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) and sophomore Jace DeShetler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) claimed a key 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Sindelar defeated Brandon Falk 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) won a key 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.
The clinching point came from Berghorst at No. 5 singles as he won by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
COACHES COMMENT: "A really good road win," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross. "We needed to dig down and get contributions from everyone and I thought we did. Doubles were key. I thought we showed a lot of grit. I'm just so proud of this group. They fought hard and delivered."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Olivet on Saturday in a conference match at 11 a.m. in Grand Rapids.
