Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin baseball fell short in a conference contest against Alma with a final score of 8-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Alma quickly started the game off with two runs in the top of the first as Calvin found itself trailing 2-0 early. Both teams went scoreless in the next two innings until the Knights tied things up in the bottom of the fifth.
A sac fly by senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) and an RBI walk by junior Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) with the bases loaded tied the game at 2-2. The Scots answered with three runs in the 6th and two runs in the 8th to lead 7-2 going into the 8th.
Calvin struggled to get the bats going in the later innings and trailed 8-2 as the game went into the bottom of the 9th. The Knights managed to score a pair of runs with RBI singles from Petersen and freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, MI / Okemos) to only trail 8-4.
The comeback wasn't enough in the end as they Calvin falls to Alma with a score of 8-4. The Knights go to 8-9 overall on the season and 1-3 in the MIAA.
Sophomore Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, MI / Grandville High School) took the loss on the mound, finishing with two strikeouts and four walks.
