Box Score 2 Calvin baseball split a doubleheader with Hope College on Friday afternoon with a 5-0 shutout win in game one and a 10-9 loss in game two. The Knights are now 15-15 overall and 8-9 in the MIAA. The Knights remain in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAA Tournament but will need a big week next week as they travel to Alma on Monday and then face Albion in a three-game series later in the week.
Game 1
Calvin 5, Hope 0
The Knights started the scoring in the game with two runs in the bottom of the second. Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) scored off an error by the Flying Dutchmen to score the first run. Junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) hit an RBI single to give them the 2-0 lead.
Calvin quickly added another run in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 3-0 after Hung scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Rick Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to deep left field to lead 5-0. Sophomore Ian Doyle (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) had a stellar day on the mound for the Knights as went a full seven innings while holding Hope to three hits and collected six strikeouts as well.
Both teams went scoreless the rest of the contest as the Knights held on to win 5-0 and take game one of the doubleheader. Freshman Ryan Brown (Caledonia, MI / Caledonia) helped secured the win by coming on in relief for the final two innings of play.
Hung finished game one with two hits while Padilla finished with the one homer and two RBIs.
Game 2
Hope 10, Calvin 9
In game two, it was tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the second after a two-run RBI double by Warners. The Flying Dutchmen stormed back in the third inning by scoring three runs to take a 5-2 lead over the Knights.
Calvin quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth by scoring four runs thanks to an error by Hope, a two-run RBI double by senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West), and a sac fly by junior Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) to lead 6-5.
The Flying Dutchmen tied the game up in the top of fifth, but a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth allowed Hung to score and retake the lead with a score of 7-6. However, Hope answered back with a three-run home run to take a 9-7 lead.
Calvin wasn't giving up as it added a run in the seventh with an RBI single by Warners to make it 9-8. Hope extended its lead by to 10-8 in the top of the eighth and Calvin went scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
The Knights had one last shot in the bottom of the ninth and began to get a rally going after a solo shot by senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) to only trail 10-9. Hope held off Calvin after the homerun and secured the 10-9 win over the Knights.
Calvin finished with 16 hits in the loss with Vogel hitting four hits in the game followed by J.C. Fortmann and Warners each getting three hits.
