Calvin Takes Series Finale From Trine

Box Score

The Calvin baseball team picked up a key conference win against Trine, winning 15-5 at home on Monday afternoon.

Trine started the game out by scoring two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead over Calvin. The Knights went scoreless in the first three innings of the game, but finally broke through in the fourth.

Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford) hit a two-run RBI single to score two runs and another run was added after a passed ball to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.

Calvin continued to stay hot in the fifth inning as senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) started the inning out with a two-run RBI double. Sac flies by Hung and J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) extended its lead to 7-2.

The Knights added two more runs in the sixth to lead 9-2 thanks to a two-run homer by senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway). The Thunder added two runs in the seventh but Hung answered with a solo shot to left field to put the Knights up 10-4.

Calvin put up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly from junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) and an RBI double by Ryan Petersen (Glen Gllyn, IL / Glenbard West) to lead 12-4.

Trine scored one run in the eighth, but Calvin put the game away in the bottom of the inning. Fortman hit an RBI single to put them up 13-5. Freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, MI / Okemos) drilled a two-run RBI triple to right field to lead 15-5 and ended the game as they led by ten runs after seven innings of play.

Senior Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) took home his third win of the season with four strikeouts and three walks. Hung ended the afternoon with a great day at the plate with three hits and four RBIs.

The Knights improve to 14-13 overall on the year and 7-7 in the MIAA.

COACHES COMMENT: "Solid start from Zach Thor today," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin Van Duyn. "We had a lot of timely hitting. We scored 15 runs while only leaving five runners on base. I was happy with our efficiency at the plate."

UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Hope for a single game to start the series on Thursday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
