Box Score 2 Calvin split a conference doubleheader at Trine Saturday afternoon, winning game one 7-3 and falling in game two 7-2. The Knights are now 13-13 overall and 6-7 in league play.
GAME ONE
Calvin 7, Trine 3
Calvin scored four in the third and three in the seventh to pull away for the win.
The Knights rode the left arm of senior Hayden White (Spring Valley, Ca./Grossmont HS) who went 7.1 innings, striking out four and allowing only four hits to run his season record to 3-1.
Freshman Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) came on in the eighth and sealed the win, tossing the final 1.2 innings.
In the third, senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) had an RBI double, senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) had an RBI single and senior Nate Bonter (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) also had an RBI single.
In the seventh, Raymond singled home another run and then executed a double-steal with Bonter as Bonter swiped second and Raymond raced home.
Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) followed with a run-scoring single to plate Bonter.
Padilla went 3-for-4 while Raymond, Bonter, Hung and junior Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) all had two hits apiece.
GAME TWO
Trine 7, Calvin 2
Trine broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the third and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Calvin had six hits in the loss with senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) collecting two hits.
Sophomore Ian Doyle (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) took the loss for the Knights, going five innings with junior Brayden Schoonbeck (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and freshman Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins HS) coming on in relief.
NEXT UP: Calvin will close out the three-game series with Trine on Monday, hosting the Thunder in a single game slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
