Box Score 2 Calvin baseball split its doubleheader on the road at defending MIAA champion Adrian with a 13-0 loss in game one followed by a 6-3 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Adrian's Nicolay Field.
The Knights move to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA.
Game 1
Adrian 13, Calvin 0
The Bulldogs came out swinging in game one with 15 hits including a 9-run inning in the bottom of the third.
Calvin struggled to get hits as it ended the game with one hit and fell to Adrian with a final score of 13-0.
Freshman Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, IN / Valparaiso) took the loss on the mound for the Knights with one strikeout and one walk.
Game 2
Calvin 6 Adrian 3
The Knights found themselves trailing 2-0 early in the second game after the first inning of play. Calvin finally got the scoring going in the top of the 2nd. Calvin scored three runs with help from an RBI double by senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) and an RBI single by freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, MI / Okemos).
Adrian scored another run in the second to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third inning. The Knights continued their great hitting day with an RBI double by senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Calvin continued to add runs and thanks to a 2-run RBI double by junior Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North), the Knights led 6-3 going into the fifth inning.
Senior Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) had a nice day on the mound, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits in seven innings of work while collecting six strikeouts as well.
Junior Calvin Miller (Fremont, MI / Fremont) stepped in the final two innings to secure the 6-3 win over Adrian.
Thor collected the win to improve to 2-1 on the season while Miller posted his first save of the year.
Calvin had 12 hits as a team with Petersen, Bonnemer, Penn and senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) collecting two hits apiece. Penn drove in three runs.
