Box Score 2 Calvin baseball split a conference doubleheader with Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon with a 9-4 win in game one and 13-6 loss in game two.
Game 1
Calvin 9, Kalamazoo 4
The game began with Kalamazoo gaining an early 1-0 lead over Calvin in the bottom of the first. Calvin went scoreless in the first and second inning but used a big third inning to take the lead over Kalamazoo.
The Knights scored five runs in the top of the third including RBI singles from senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) and freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, MI / Okemos) along with a two-run RBI double by senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford). Calvin led 5-2 after the third as Kalamazoo scored another run.
The Knights scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 7-2 over the Hornets. Padilla hit an RBI double in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 8-2. Kalamazoo cut the deficit to four with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4.
Junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) added an insurance run in the seventh with a run-scoring single up the middle to make it 9-4. The Knights shutout the Hornets in the last three innings to pick up a game one win with a final score of 9-4.
Senior Hayden White (Spring Valley, CA / Grossmont) earned his second win of the year on the mound with three strikeouts and two walks.
With his pair of doubles, Padilla became the Calvin career leader in two-base hits, boosting his career total to 41 doubles. Padilla passed former record holder Nate DeZwaan who had the previous career record with 40.
Game 2
Kalamazoo 13, Calvin 6
The Knights started game two by taking a 1-0 lead in the first after a sac fly by senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy). The Hornets answered right back in the bottom of the second with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth inning, but Calvin got the bats going in the fifth. Senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) hit an RBI double to score the first run and junior Caden Penn hit an RBI single to score the second run of the fifth.
Kalamazoo added another run in the fifth and the game was tied at 3-3 as it headed to the top of the sixth. Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford, Mott) hit a two-run RBI triple to retake the lead for the Knights and scored on a wild pitch to give them a 6-3 lead.
The Hornets came right back at the Knights with a big eight-run inning to retake the lead with a score of 11-6. Kalamazoo continued its momentum with another run in the seven to extend the lead to 12-6.
Calvin struggled to get the bats going in the final three innings and Kalamazoo added another run to its lead to win 13-6.
The Knights move to 12-12 overall on the season and 5-6 in the MIAA.
