Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin baseball's comeback effort fell short as the Knights fell 12-10 against conference opponent Kalamazoo on Friday afternoon.
The Hornets came out swinging in the first two innings as they jumped out to a huge 11-0 lead over the Knights going into the bottom of the second. The Knights began putting runs on the board in the second with a two-run RBI double by senior J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) to make it 11-2.
Calvin continued to come back in the game as the Knights added three more runs in the third. Senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) hit a sac fly along with an RBI triple by Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) which helped them trail 11-5 as the game headed to the fourth.
The Knight kept the scoring up as they added another run in the fifth with an RBI single by Hung to cut the deficit to five. Kalamazoo struggled to get the bats going as sophomore Brayden Schoonbeck (Grand Rapids, MI / GR West Catholic HS) had great innings on the mound in relief for Calvin.
Calvin wasn't backing down in the game as they scored four runs in the sixth inning including a three-run homerun by Vogel to trail by one with a score of 11-10. Kalamazoo answered Calvin by holding them scoreless the last three innings and adding another run in the eighth.
The Knights fall to the Hornets with a final score of 12-10 and goes to 11-11 overall on the season and 4-5 in the MIAA.
Vogel finished the afternoon with two hits and four RBIs while Hung and Fortmann each had two RBIs.
UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo tomorrow to finish the series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
