Box Score ALMA, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team slugged its way to a 15-5 win over Alma College Wednesday afternoon.
Cold and damp weather conditions could not keep the Calvin bats from heating up as the Knights collected 19 hits in the victory, improving to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA.
Calvin broke the game open with a five-run fourth and a three-run fifth.
The Knights had four extra-base hits in the win.
Junior Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) and senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) both went 4-for-4 at the plate. Penn scored three runs and drove in three runs in the win.
Senior Rick Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) and freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) had two hits apiece.
Freshman Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso HS) went the first five innings and got the win, striking out four and walking one. Senior Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) and freshman Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) also came on in relief to cement the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had solid defense, turned three double plays and didn't commit any errors," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin Van Duyn. "We had excellent hitting with 19 hits and out pitching was very strong. That's a good recipe' for winning and the goal is to keep it going."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Kalamazoo on Friday for a conference game at 4 p.m.
