ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team picked up a key 5-4 conference win at Albion Tuesday afternoon.
The win lifts the Knights to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Calvin received clutch wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to open the match to grab a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The Knights were able to split the remaining six singles points to claim the victory.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) picked up a key 8-6 win over Brett Gurzell and Drake Malcomb.
Freshman Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and sophomore Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) then claimed an 8-5 win over Danny McGarry and Patrick Smoker at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Johnston defeated Malcomb 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Berhorst dropped Smoker 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles
Sophomore Jace DeShelter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had a deciding point at No. 6 singles, defeating Cecil Burkhart 6-0, 6-3.
COACHES COMMENT: "A very good win for our team today," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross. "We had clutch wins in doubles and we did we needed to do in order to finish off a win. I'm just so proud of this team. Our guys worked together for another road win and pulled together. It's never easy to win on the road in the MIAA and we are very happy to get this victory."
