ORLANDO, Fla. – Calvin closed out its spring trip to Florida with victories over Regis (Mass.) and Cornell (Ia.) on Saturday.
The Knights improve to 7-2 on the season with the victories.
Calvin opened the day with a 6-3 win over Regis.
In doubles, Calvin picked up a key win at No. 2 doubles with the tandem of freshman Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and sophomore Nate Morren (Garden City, Ks./Garden City HS) combining for an 8-4 win.
Sophomore Joseph Hong (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) claimed a key 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles while Moren picked up a solid 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Calvin continued on to defeat Cornell College of Iowa 6-3 Saturday evening.
The Knights took two of the three doubles points to gain the early edge.
Johnston and sophomore Joseph Hong (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) and sophomore Jace DeShetler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) were 8-0 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin's lineup depth proved pivotal as it gained singles victories at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles to seal the win.
Johnston picked up a 7-6, 6-1 win over Justin Mendez at No. 3 singles. Hong moved ahead to down Chris Hull 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Berghorst defeated Orion Mason 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while DeShetler was dominant in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Edwin Holyoake at No. 6 singles.
