Calvin Men’s Tennis Continues Strong MIAA Start with Win at Albion

ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin University men's tennis team earned its third straight win to open conference play by a 6-1 final at Albion College on Saturday.
 
Calvin (5-6, 3-0 MIAA) earned the win by taking two of the three doubles contests over Albion (6-6, 0-2 MIAA) and then winning five of six singles matches in straight sets.
 
The Knights led off the match in doubles, where the one-doubles team of Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and Mario Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) won 6-4, and the three-doubles team of Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Caleb Bartels (Loch Lloyd, Mo./Kansas City Christian) won 7-5 to clinch the first point.
 
Leading 1-0 in the match, Calvin earned straight sets wins in each of the first five spots in the line-up to secure the overall win.
 
Alipio (6-2, 6-3), Bartels (6-0, 6-4), Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) (6-2, 6-0), Diego Castellanos (Tarija, Bolivia/La Salle Tarija) (6-2, 6-0) and Neto (6-0, 6-3) each won their matches in straight sets, while Warners fought in six-singles but fell in three sets 6-2, 4-6 and 0-1 (6-10) third-set tiebreaker.
 
NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Tuesday, April 14, when it plays at Trine University in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
