ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin University men's tennis team remains unbeaten in MIAA play following a 6-1 win at Trine University on Tuesday.
Calvin (6-6, 4-0 MIAA) earned the win thanks to a doubles sweep and five singles win over Trine (12-5, 2-2 MIAA) to remain atop the conference standings.
To open the match, Calvin swept doubles play to take a 1-0 overall lead. The Knights earned 6-3 wins from both the one-doubles team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and Mario Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) and the two-doubles team of
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) (6-2, 6-0) and
Diego Castellanos (Tarija, Bolivia/La Salle Tarija). The three-doubles team of
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Caleb Bartels (Loch Lloyd, Mo./Kansas City Christian) won 6-4 to complete the sweep.
In singles, Alipio (6-0, 6-2), Bartels (6-4, 6-2), Castellanos (6-3, 6-2) and Neto (6-3, 6-1) each won in straight sets, while Sartori won his three-singles match in a third-set tiebreaker 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
The win marked the Knights' fourth in a row and their third consecutive win over the Thunder in the all-time series.
