Box Score 2 Calvin baseball split its doubleheader against Aquinas on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-2 loss in game one and a 12-8 win in game two.
Game 1 – 7 Innings
FINAL: 4-2
In the first game of the day, Aquinas quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. The Knights broke through in the third inning with an RBI single by freshman Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, MI /Okemos HS) to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, but the Saints extend their lead in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-1 game. Calvin was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth but got some momentum in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) hit an RBI single to close the gap to 4-2. Bonemer loaded the bases after another single, but the Knights couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.
Freshman Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, IN / Valparaiso) took his first loss of the season, finishing with five strikeouts and two walks. Petersen, Bonemer and senior Ricky Padillas (Poway, CA / Poway) each finished the game with two hits.
Game 2 - 9 Innings
FINAL: 12-8
Game two began with the Saints grabbing an early 2-0 lead over the Knights going into the bottom of the second. Calvin answered with an RBI single by Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) to make it 2-1. The Knights tied the game at 2-2 after an RBI double to center by junior Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) in the bottom of the third.
Calvin regained the lead in the fourth inning as a few fielding errors by Aquinas helped give them a 4-3 lead. Senior Nate Bonter (Grand Haven, MI / Grand Haven) hit an RBI sac fly to extend Calvin's lead to 5-3 heading into the sixth inning.
The Knights slowly extended their lead with an RBI single by Bonter and an RBI double by Penn that quickly gave them an 8-4 lead. The Saints responded by rattling off four runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 8-8.
Calvin then answered with a four-run inning of its own with a few fielding errors and big RBI triple by Bonemer to take a 12-8 lead heading to the top of the ninth. Junior Calvin Miller (Fremont, MI / Fremont) held off the Saints in the final inning to secure the 12-8 win while upping his season record to 3-0.
Penn finished with three hits and three RBIs while Hung ended the game with two hits and two RBIs. Bonter also had a two RBI day with one hit in the Knights' win.
