Calvin dropped a tough 5-4 non-conference match to visiting Bethel (Ind.) Saturday afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
The visiting Pilots took two of the three doubles points and gained a split in singles to gain the one-point match win.
In doubles, Calvin's No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) and sophomore Jace DeShetler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) cruised to an 8-0 win but Bethel took 8-3 wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to lead 2-1 heading into singles play.
Bethel took the top three flights in singles play to clinch the match.
Calvin singles victories came from sophomore Joseph Hong (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) at No. 4 singles, sophomore Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) at No. 5 singles and DeShetler at No. 6 singles.
Hong downed Jerad Bos 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Berghorst went overtime to defeat Vansh Aggarwal 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 5 singles while DeShetler came up with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jayson LaGrou at No. 6 singles.
Calvin (7-3) returns to action on Friday when it hosts Spring Arbor in a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. in Grand Rapids.
