Box Score DAVENPORT, Fla. – Calvin used a 19-hit attack to claim an 11-4 victory over Grove City College Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the Knight charge.
Calvin (2-3) grabbed an early lead with three runs in the top of the third with senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) belting a solo home run and Warners delivering an RBI single.
Calvin added another run in the fourth and two more in the top of the seventh with Raymond smacking an RBI double.
Grove City (3-3) rallied for a four-run frame in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 6-4 game.
Calvin junior hurler Calvin Williams (Fremont, Mich./Fremont HS) was able to come in relief to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Knights then added four insurance runs in the top of the eighth and another run in the ninth to cement the win. Senior Rick Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) collected a two-run RBI double that plated Raymond and senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS).
Petersen was one of five Calvin players to record multi-hit games was he was 2-for-5 at the plate. Senior Nate Bonter (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) was 3-for-5 at the dish with two RBI while Raymond was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Freshman shortstop Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) had three hits and three runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins HS) got the start and was stellar, striking out eight batters in six innings of work.
COACHES COMMENT: "Great hitting and great pitching today," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin Van Duyn. "It was a real team effort and it feels good to get another win. We have a day to rest and then it's back at it for a busy final stretch of the week."
