ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin men's tennis team picked up a well-earned 6-3 win over St. Mary's of Minnesota Monday afternoon.
The Knights improve to 2-1 on the 2021-22 season.
Calvin claimed two of the three doubles points to gain the early edge. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and sophomore Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were 8-0 winners. Sophomore Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) and sophomore Jace DeShetler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) blew by their opponents for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, the Knights took four of the six singles points to seal the win.
At No. 1 singles, Sindelaar dropped Brandon Kurilla 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Joseph Hong (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) hung on for a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 win at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles to finish out Calvin's singles wins.
COACHES COMMENT: "Very proud of this team," said Calvin head tennis coach John Ross. "I was extremely happy with the mental toughness displayed by the men's teams in some really tight matches. This was a good win for our group."
