Calvin jumped out to a 7-0 lead with seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Knights rapped out six hits, used an error, a hit batter and a walk to build the early advantage. Senior Nate Bonter (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) had a two-run RBI single. Senior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) drove in a run and scored one in the inning.

Moravian began to chip back into the Calvin lead, scoring single runs in the first, second and third. The Greyhounds then scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead.

Calvin loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but did not score. The Knights were then retired in order in the seventh to fall by a two-run deficit.

Calvin outhit Moravian 13-12 led by Petersen who went 3-for-4. Bonter, senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy), senior Rick Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) and senior J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, Il./Elgin HS) all had two hits apiece.

The Knights used four pitchers. Sophomore Luke Braselton (Grand Rapids, Mich./G.R. Catholic Central HS) took the loss in relief.

GAME TWO
Calvin 6, Moravian 5

Calvin gained a come-from-behind win over Moravian, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Bonter reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball to open the scoring for the Knights in the bottom of the first.

Moravian came back with five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) walked and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the gap to 5-2.

In the seventh, Calvin loaded the bases and then plated two runs on an infield throwing error. Calvin tied the game on a fielder's choice by Bonter that brought home senior Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) who had reached base on a walk.

Calvin retired the Moravian (3-3) side in order in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the inning, Raymond and freshman Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins HS) connected for back-to-back one-out singles. Raymond then came home with the game-winning run on another infield throwing error for the Greyhounds.

Sophomore Ian Doyle (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) got the start and went the first four innings. Sophomore Brayden Schoonbeck (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) went three innings in relief with junior Calvin Miller (Fremont, Mich./Fremont HS) throwing the final frame to pick up the win in relief. Miller struck out two batters in the eighth.

Padilla had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a long day of baseball but our guys hung tough and kept fighting back," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin Van Duyn. "We hit the ball well today and came up with some key plays in game two to get the win. Our pitchers banded together to help get us the game two win. It's great to be outside playing baseball. We're grateful for that. We've got several games ahead this week so it will be one play and one game at a time."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Grove City on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Davenport, Florida.
