Box Score 2 DAVENPORT Fla. – The Calvin baseball team opened its 2022 season by dropping both ends of a doubleheader with Widener University on Saturday. Calvin dropped the opener 6-2 and then fell 13-4 in game two.
GAME ONE
Widener 6, Calvin 2
Widener grabbed a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and another in the third. Calvin grabbed a run back in the top of the fourth as junior Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) singled and moved to third on a base hit by senior Rick Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS). Senior Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) then brought home Penn from third with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Widener answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to build a 6-1 lead.
Calvin came back with a run in the sixth as senior Nate Bonter (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) walked, moved to third on a double by Penn and then scored on another sacrifice fly by Raymond.
The Knights were unable to score again however as Widener picked up the win.
Penn and Padilla had two hits apiece for Calvin. Senior Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) took the loss for the Knights, striking out one and walking one. Freshman Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins HS) threw 1.1 innings of relief.
GAME TWO
Widener 13, Calvin 4
Calvin was unable to withstand a 12-hit Widener attack as the Knights dropped game two Saturday evening.
Widener scored a run in the top of the first but Calvin responded with run-scoring doubles by Penn and Raymond to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Widener tied the game with a run in the third and added three in fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game away.
Reynolds had two of Calvin's six hits including a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore Jake Monroe (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) took the loss for Calvin.
The Knights are back in action on Monday, taking on Moravian in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. in Davenport, Florida.
