BRISTOL, Wisc. - The Calvin women's golf team is in third place through day one of the 16-team Battle on the Border Tournament hosted by Carthage College at the Bristol Oaks Golf Club.
Calvin posted a team score of 330 strokes, five strokes ahead of defending MIAA champion Saint Mary's. Carthage holds first place with a team score of 298 strokes with Wisconsin-Whitewater second with 326 strokes.
Sophomore Chandler Sjoerdsma (Riverside, Ca./Martin Luther King HS) had a sparkling afternoon with a round of 76 that has her in third place in the overall individual standings. Senior Emma Dykhouse (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was next for the Knights with a round of 80 that has her in ninth place in the individual standings.
Senior Kaylee Hirschman (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) was third on the Calvin list with an 83 that has her in 15th place.
Sophomore Georgie Scholtens (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a 91 and junior Jericha Scharphorn (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) a 93 to round out Calvin's lineup of finishers.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a really strong team performance," said Calvin head women's golf coach Jerry Bergsma. "Chandler had a big day and she came very close to shooting even lower today. The rest of our lineup was very focused and I am very pleased with our entire team. We have put ourselves in a good position but there is work to be done tomorrow. We are looking forward to the opportunity."
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete on day two of the tournament on Saturday with opening tee times set for 9 a.m. (CST).
