Box Score 2 The Knights swept a doubleheader against visiting Albion to extend their winning streak to six games. Calvin is now 19-14 overall and 14-8 in the MIAA.
Game 1
Calvin 7, Albion 3
In the first game, the Britons jumped out to early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sac fly. Calvin couldn't get anything going until the third inning where it scored two runs. The first came from senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) putting the ball in play to score the runner from third. Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) hit an RBI single to center field to give Calvin the 2-1 lead.
Senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, MI / Jenison) was holding back the Britons until they got their bats going in the sixth inning. Albion scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Knights needed runs and Calvin was able to come through and place runners on base. Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run of the inning.
Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) came up big for Calvin with a bases clearing triple to score three runs for the Knights. Will Baldwin (Lake Orion, MI / Notre Dame) on the next play laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to give Calvin a 7-3 lead heading to the top of the seventh. Eli Johnson (Stillwater, OK / Stillwater) closed things out in the seventh to secure the win for Calvin.
Game 2
Calvin 8, Albion 2
The second game of the afternoon had Calvin scoring in the second inning as Vogel scored on a passed ball. The third inning junior Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) hit an RBI single to left to give Calvin a 2-0 lead. The Britons hit a homer in the fourth to make It a 2-1 game. The Knights used a three run fifth inning to make it a 5-1 game with Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) smacking an RBI single while Hung hit the two RBI single to give them the Knights a 5-1 lead.
The Britons scored another run in the top of the sixth inning, but Calvin answered with three more runs. Sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) hit a double to right field while Padilla hit a two-run homer to left to extend Calvin's lead to 8-2 heading into the top of seventh.
Senior Henry Breems (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) closed out the game for Calvin as senior Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) pitched a scoreless seventh for the Knights to secure the 8-2 win. Penn finished the game with four hits while Padilla had two hits and three RBIs in the game.
COACHES COMMENTS: "In the first game, we got put in a dire situation in the sixth inning and we came through as a team," said Head Coach Kevin VanDuyn. "We are scoring early, but we are also scoring late to help us get the wins. It was a great day for our team and great pitching from Peter, Trevor, Eli and Henry. Two good wins to keep our momentum going."
UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Albion on Friday for a doubleheader.
