Box Score 2 The Calvin baseball team closed out its season by falling out of the MIAA Tournament after a 6-1 loss to Hope and an 8-6 loss to Albion.
Game 1
Hope 6, Calvin 1
In the first three innings of game one, neither team could get any scoring going. Senior Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) held the Flying Dutch back, until they hit a solo homerun in the fourth to take the 1-0 lead.
Hope extended its lead in the top of the fifth with a four-run inning, making it a 5-0 game. Calvin was finally able to get on the board as Junior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) hit an RBI single to center field to score Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) from second. The Knights trailed 5-1 entering the sixth inning.
The Flying Dutch added another run in the seventh inning and held Calvin scoreless the rest of the way.
Calvin stranded nine baserunners in the loss. The Knights had five hits with Petersen collecting two of the five base knocks. VanDyken took the loss to slip to 3-2 on the year.
Game 2
Albion 8, Calvin 6
Calvin took on Albion in an elimination game and grabbed the early lead in the second inning. Warners hit an RBI single to center field to score J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) for a 1-0 lead. The Knights added two more runs in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Warners and Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) to lead 3-0.
Senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) hit a sac fly to center field in the top of the fifth inning to put the Knights ahead 4-0. Junior Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) held the Britons to zero runs in the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Calvin put two more runs on the board with an RBI double from Vogel and a sac fly from Warners to make it a 6-0 game.
The Britons finally got their bats going and scored one run in the sixth inning to trail 6-1. Albion then mounted a seven-run rally in the bottom of the eighth, using four hits, a walk and three Calvin errors to take a stunning 8-6 lead.
The Knights were then retired in order in the top of the ninth to allow Albion to claim the come-from-behind win.
Calvin outhit Albion 12-9 but committed six fielding errors in the defeat. Vogel had three hits. Petersen, Fortmann and Warners had two hits apiece.
The Knights end the year with an overall record of 22-16, marking their highest win total since the 2015 season when it finished 22-21.
This was the final collegiate game for seniors Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, MI / Jenison), Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg), Peter VanDyken, Henry Breems (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian), and Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian).
