Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin baseball split its home doubleheader against rival Hope by winning game one 7-1 and losing game two 17-9.
The Knights started game one by taking the early lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) scored the first run on a balk by the Hope pitcher. Sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) hit an RBI single to make it 2-0 for the Knights. Sophomore Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) added another for Calvin in the second inning as they took a 3-0 lead heading to the third inning.
Calvin continued to add more runs in the bottom of third with junior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) scoring on a wild pitch, and J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) hitting a sac fly to right field. This extended the lead for Calvin to 5-0 after the third. The Knights added another run the fourth thanks to a solo homerun by Pompey.
Senior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, MI / Jenison) was pitching a stellar game for Calvin as he shut out the Flying Dutchmen in the first five innings of play. Hope was able to score one in the sixth and Calvin scored one run as well to make it a 7-1 game heading to the seventh. VanDuyn closed out the game and secured the win for the Knights with a score of 7-1.
The second game had Hope coming out swinging right away as it scored three runs in the top of the first. Calvin responded quickly as Petersen hit a sac fly to center and senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) hit an RBI single to make it 3-2. They weren't done yet in the first as senior Andrew Hung hit a two-run RBI double to give them a 4-3 lead after the first.
Hope scored two more runs in the second, and Calvin did as well with Petersen hitting another sac fly and Padilla hit an RBI single. This made it a 7-6 game after two innings of play. Each team added another run in the third with Pompey hitting a sac fly to make it an 8-7 game. The Hope pitching started shutting down Calvin as the Knights went scoreless in innings four-through-six. The Flying Dutch managed to extend their lead to 17-7 after the top of seventh.
The Knights scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homerun by Pompey, but it wasn't enough as the Flying Dutchmen salvaged the doubleheader.
